Greenway Parks resident Nancy Jeffett inducted into International Tennis Hall ... - Dallas Morning News

When Nancy Jeffett began her work to promote women's professional tennis in the 1950s and 1960s, the Women's Tennis Association hadn't been founded, no official rule book had been written and tournament prize money wasn't equal between men and women.

"Every question that is today in the books for the tournament directors, for the players, every one of those things had to be fleshed out," said Nancy's daughter, Elizabeth "Sissy" Jeffett. "My mother was one of the main ones at all of the tournament directors meetings."

It's those contributions to women's tennis and her work to further junior level tennis that recently landed 87-year-old Nancy Jeffett the most coveted award in tennis: enshrinement into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

Dozens of plaques, trophies and photos line a wall in her Greenway Parks home -- each one representing a memory of her life in tennis.

She's a member of the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame and the Washington University (St. Louis) Sports Hall of Fame. She's the only American woman who has never won at Wimbledon to be invited to join The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

"Nancy's impact on all of tennis -- especially women's tennis -- has been huge," said Billie Jean King, who issued a statement on Nancy Jeffett's behalf. "For the professional players she created a tournament in Dallas that set the standard by which all U.S. tournaments were measured during the lengthy and historic run of the event."

King, who founded the Women's Tennis Association and is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, said Nancy Jeffett provided opportunities and access for young players to play tennis and learn valuable life lessons.

"It was a thrill for me to see her inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame last weekend," King's statement read. "She is one of a kind, a real living legendary one of my sheroes."

As a player, Nancy Jeffett rose to No. 10 nationally in the United States Tennis Association Girls' 18 division in 1946.

"Nancy has won about every major tennis award you could win. The pinnacle of that was being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame," said Cindy Brinker Simmons, daughter of the late nine-time Grand Slam tournament champion Maureen "Little Mo" Connolly Brinker.

Over the years, Nancy Jeffett chaired both the Wightman and Federation cups. In 1986, she served as the United States team captain of a politically charged Federation Cup match up against Czechoslovakia.

The match marked tennis player Martina Navrátilová's first trip back to her native country since she defected to the U.S. in 1975.

"When we won, we got a standing ovation from everybody in the arena -- for beating their team," Nancy Jeffett said.

Former professional player Pam Shriver, who introduced Nancy Jeffett during the July 18 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, described her as a risk-taker.

"She's somebody who not only has a vision, but she sees it through," Shriver said.

People told Nancy Jeffett nobody would pay money to watch women's tennis, but she didn't listen, Elizabeth Jeffett said.

The inaugural Maureen Connolly Brinker Memorial Tournament in 1970 proved those naysayers wrong. People gave money to support the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation, which Nancy set up with her friend, Maureen Connolly Brinker, in 1968 to further women's and junior level tennis.

Then in 1972, Nancy Jeffett promised women a chance at prize money and to appear on television for http://texastennisopen.com the first time at the Maureen Connolly Brinker ladies championships. This tournament would later turn into the Virginia Slims of Dallas.

"I was one of the first persons to stick my neck out and raise the money for [women]," Nancy Jeffett said.

With the Virginia Slims of Dallas and the men's World Championship Tennis finals played here in the 1970s and '80s, the city was the tennis capital of North America, if not the world, Elizabeth Jeffett said.

The road to the women's championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City often went through Virginia Slims of Dallas, making the city a crucial stop for any female players at the time, Shriver said.

But the tour stop wasn't just about strategic competition.

"I mean [Dallas] is a great tennis community -- to me it had an enthusiasm, it had a spirit, it had a social side that just was a great combination for a lot of us," said Shriver, who won 21 singles titles as a player and now is a tennis broadcaster for ESPN.

Players were matched up with host families, which cut down on hotel bills and in some cases allowed life-long friendships to develop.

"Dallas was special because the people made them feel like they were at home," Elizabeth Jeffett said.

In 1989, Nancy Jeffett sold Virginia Slims of Dallas to a Japanese advertising agency, and the tournament moved to Tokyo.

It fit in with tennis' changing landscape. By that time, interest in the game was spreading all over the world to make it the international game it is today, Nancy Jeffett said.

The sale endowed the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation, enabling Nancy Jeffett to continue its core mission of junior tennis development.

Road to the Little Mo Nationals, the foundation's year-long circuit for boys and girls ages 8-12, includes 19 sectional tournaments and four regional tournaments leading up to the Little Mo Nationals each year in Austin.

In addition, the foundation also hosts three "Little Mo" International Open tournaments throughout the country.

For Simmons, who took over as president of the foundation for Nancy Jeffett in 2007, the success of the program isn't the volume of promising tennis players it has churned out.

"We have a program that also accentuates character, good sportsmanship, having fun with the sport and developing a love for tennis that these kids will take on with them into their future," Simmons said.

Though she's retired from the foundation, Nancy Jeffett has kept her eye on the tennis world.

Every year, she attends Wimbledon, and she stays informed on current happenings in the game.

Like many other tennis fans, she has her attention on Serena Williams. If Williams wins the U.S. Open., she would be the first American woman to win all four Grand Slam championships in a calendar year since Maureen Connolly Brinker did it in 1953.

"She's done so well. We should be very proud of her," Nancy Jeffett said of Williams.

When Nancy Jeffett looks back on her life in tennis, it's not the accomplishments that come to mind, but rather what the experiences meant to her.

"I think the most important thing is that I've had so much fun doing it. It's been a labor of love. I've never thought of it as anything other than it was fun," she said.
